From Geneva Gazette 2 December 1881 Registrar of Vital Statistics
A law of 1880 (chap. 412) made provision for collecting and reporting to the State Board of Health statistics of births and marriages. The law was not, however, mandatory in its nature, but left it discretionary with Boards of Supervisors to carry out its provisions, particularly as relating to expense. The Board of Ontario County refused to take action to carry out the law. By Chap. 431 laws of 1881, local Boards of Health are required to collect and report such statistics, and the expense thereof, not exceeding 50 cts. for each record of a birth, marriage or death, is made a legal charge against the village or town each Board represents. The Board of Health of the village of Geneva has just been provided with the necessary books and blanks for making out and preserving such statistics, and today publishes orders requiring reports from Clergymen, and others who perform marriage ceremonies, and physicians who attend at accouchments, and upon patients immediately preceding their decease. The keeping of such records will begin with the new year. |
