10 April 1874

Bristol, April 6th, 1874 -
Mr. Editor:  For the last two or three weeks I have been too busily engaged to find time to send you any items, and it is with profound sadness that I write today, for truly, in this community, at this time, "the mourners go about the streets."

The death of Mrs. Julia A. Simmons, aged 23 years, wife of John Simmons, and only daughter of Henry P. and Julia A. Simmons, which occurred on Wednesday, March 25th, after a very brief illness, cast a gloom over the community, which was rendered much darker and deeper by the death of Mrs. Orestes Case, at the age of 52 years, on the night of April 1st, and by that of Mrs. Aaron Hicks, in the 80th year of her age, on the morning of April 2d.  Add to these a child of George Pestle, aged about 5 years, and one of Cyrus Pierce, aged about 12 years, which have died, and we have a record of mortality very unusual in our quiet country town.
