FOOTNOTES: 1.
George, who married Tamour Burt, is listed in the DAR Index as follows:
Cobb: Cobbs
George: b. 1756 d --- m. Tamour Burt Pvt. MA
I believe the George who died in 1851 was his son
who was b. in MA in 1782. I have him on the 1850 census of
Ontario Co. Therefore, considering
the age of Lydia, I would say she was a second wife to George Cobb,
Sr.
Donated by Linda; thanks for the information.

FOOTNOTE 2: Thanks
to Shirley Scott Naughton for
providing the additional information:
My information comes from a family book, A HISTORY OF THE
HINMANS, published 1907 and from family knowledge.
I am the great-great-granddaughter of Captain Abner and Lydia
(Beckwith) Hinman. (After Abner's death,
Lydia moved to Phelps with her children, joined the
Presbyterian Church at Oaks Corners and married Ephraim Taylor.)
Abner and Lydia's daughter, Julia Ann Hinman, b.
12-24-1809 in Goshen, CT, d.1835 in Phelps. Mary
Hinman, wife of Willis (son of Lydia and first husband,
Abner). Mary was the daughter of Ephraim Taylor and his first
wife. (Ephraim is also spelled "Ephriam" in another mention in "The
History of the Hinmans".)
My great-grandparents, Henry and Charlotte (Hinman) Scott
are listed as parents of daughter, Mary Jane. (An
early federal census in NY lists their name as Scutt; that is in
all likelihood an error. Illinois census lists all as "Scott" and that
is how our family is known.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF HARRIS FARM CEMETERY
The land along Maryland Street Road in the first mile north of Gifford
Road in the Phelps Gore, west of the Canandaigua Outlet, was originally
surveyed as Great Lots 2, 4, 6, and 8 -- 8 being the farthest
north. The cemetery is located on the eastern portion of Lot
6. This lot was first settled by the John Israel family about
1800. Laury J. Clark, the infant buried in the cemetery, is a
granddaughter of John Israel.
Lot 8 was first settled by Eli Parrish about 1800, and then shared
with his brother Israel. The first burials noted would be the
"four infants" who preceded the death of John Roy. John Roy was
the brother-in-law of Eli and Israel, and had settled on parts of Lots
2 and 4 around 1800. The next would be William Davis, who was 47
years old (an error in the record.) William was the only Davis in
Phelps, and the date of death fits the date
of his recorded will and the probate thereof. His farm, which he
had
settled on in 1798, was the first one south of Gifford Road on Maryland
St Rd. His daughter, Nancy Davis, had married Gilbert
Parrish,
a brother of Eli and Israel, in 1815, and they bought part of lot 6
from
the Israel family in 1816.
The reason for the cemetery being on the Israel farm instead of the
Parrish property could be:
(1) The land was close to the border of the two, was
east of the best irrigable land, and was on fairly high ground for the
area and so clear of any floods of the outlet.
(2) John Israel was the uncle of the Parrish
brothers; their parents were Richard and Sarah (Israel) Parrish.
John S. Harris bought the Parrish farm on Lot 8 in 1834, and the first
Harris burial was in 1845. The Harris family never owned any land in
Lot 6
on which the cemetery is located. Why they are in that cemetery
is not
yet explainable by me.
Naming the cemetery "Harris Farm" is therefore quite
misleading. I personally would suggest renaming it the "Maryland
Strteet Road Cemetery" since all the people recorded as being there
lived on that road. If some renaming does not occur, at
least its proper history should be attached to its listings in the
various internet sites as well as in the Ontario
and Phelps historical societies. Further history of this cemetery is
currently being researched and
it is
hoped that a complete report will be made by the end of the summer of
2001.
This information has been kindly submitted by Melvin Brown who will be doing
further
research; he would welcome contact with any persons who can be of help
to
him or who have an interest in the persons buried in this cemetery.
