SPANGLE, KREGLOH, SMITHRandy Telarico Sat 22 Nov 97
Dear Folks: I am researching the SPANGLE surname in Ontario County, NY and its connections to KREGLOH. Thus far I have meager evidence to suggest that it was Elizabeth SPANGLE, daughter of Polly SMITH and Simeon SPANGLE, who married Daniel KREGLOH in Erie County, NY around 1852. Daniel and Elizabeth had three children: Ida (1853), Mary (1855), and Edwin Simon (1859). Daniel seems to have passed away around 1859, and the remaining family moved to Ontario County. I am descended from Edwin Simon. Elizabeth SPANGLE was born in Ontario County, and the SPANGLEs seem to have been there since the early 1800's. Any information and/or connections would be very helpful. Thanks in advance! Sincerely, Randy Telarico (Individu8@aol.com)

My husband's family originally settled in Conesus and some in Canadice, New York. That is why I purchased the book. We are looking for info on his gg grandfather, Samuel SPENCER who married Mary GREGORY. This is not the Samuel SPENCER in Canadice who was married to Olive CASEY or their son. I hoped the book might provide me with some clue. We are at the "stone wall". Sheila Charlton Spencer Arlington, VA (formerly Rochester, NY) familyact1@aol.com

STAHL, LIVERMORE Kathy Reynolds Wed Oct 8 1997
STAHL--I am looking for information on Edward and Edna STAHL as well as George STAHL. George STAHL was my grandfather who passed away in 1962. We know very little about him because he was placed in an orphanage and consequently put on an orphan train in 1910 or so. He was adopted by Julia Merkel in Story City, IA. Recently, an aunt of mine located his birth certificate. George STAHL was born on Feb. 5, 1904 in Geneva, Ontario Co., New York. His parents are listed as 17 year old Edna (LIVERMORE) STAHL and 25 year-old Edward STAHL who was a farmer. My grandfather was quite young when he was placed in the orphange so he had little memory of life before the orphange and did not know if his parents had died or if he was placed in an orphange for some other reason. He seemed to remember having one or two younger sisters. The birth certificate listed him as Edward and Edna's first child. If anyone has any information about this family, please contact me.

STANDISH, JOHNSON Ann R. Davis Sat May 3 1997
Hi! I know very little about New York genealogy, being from Georgia, but I have a friend whose ancestor, Parmelia/Permelia STANDISH married Michael JOHNSON ca 1820, probably in Ontario Co., since their first children were born there, in Canandaigua. She was probably the daughter of Hadley STANDISH who died in Bristol, Ontario Co. 8-31-1815. Need to prove this. Want to locate a marriage record of Parmelia to Michael JOHNSON or perhaps a deed which might state relationships of this family after Parmelia married Michael- any advice? Any newspaper which might have given information on families of this area, and if so, is there an index? Ann R. Davis mailto:anndavis@gate.net

This e-mail address may no longer be valid
I am looking for information on the POWELL, GARDNER, and TEMPLAR families who were in the towns of Pharsalia, Plymouth, and Smyrna between 1790 and 1835 or so. Unfortunately, I don't have the exact dates. Information I have: gggg-grandfather, Elijah POWELL, married Janet TEMPLAR 12/5/1794, Pharsalia; ggg-grandfather Elijah Rosen GARDNER married Rebecca POWELL 1/25/1825, Pharsalia; ggg-grandmother Rebecca POWELL b. 12/19/1802, Smyrna; gg-grandmother Florella Augusta GARDNER b. 10/21/1826, Plynmouth. The town names in my query are in Chenago County. The information I have shows my ancestors lived in Chenago, Wayne, and Ontario counties in late 18th and early 19th centuries. I believe the GARDNERs moved from Chenago Co. to Lake Geneva, WI in the 1830s--which is where my g-g-grandmother married my g-g-grandfather, George WALLING who was born in either Wayne or Ontario Co. His brothers were Frederick and William. I believe the TEMPLARs or POWELLs lived in Chenago Co. when in NY. I'd appreciate any information on their ancestry and siblings to help complete mine. I truly appreciate any help, this is a great service! Denise Mills

TRYON, CHAFFEEVictoria Titus Wed Sat Apr 26 1997
I am trying to establish marriages for 2 siblings - Peter and Sally TRYON in the mid 1830's. Word of mouth records tend to indicate they married in Canandaigua, but I can't find any kind of record of that. Do you know about any books that might help me find them. Where they married becomes a major factor as I am trying to prove a possible 3rd sibling, Adelia Ann TRYON who was born about 1829 and married Lyman CHAFFEE. She might also have been a very early child to one of their older brothers. Adelia's probable father/grandfather is Benjamin Peter TRYON (he used both names interchangably). He settled in St. Joseph Co, MI where CHAFFEE's settled at about the same time. These CHAFFEE's were in Onondaga Co. at about the same time. Lyman CHAFFEE always states his birthplace as VT, which is were the CHAFFEE's of Hillsdale Co. MI were from. (Hillsdale Co. MI is where Adelia and Lyman married). I have no proof connecting Lyman to either group, except for his death cert states Otis CHAFFEE of VT is Lyman's father. However, he is not with his father in Hillsdale Co. in the 1840 census. I can't seem to place Lyman anyplace in 1840, and he should have showed up as he was 25 or so and possibly living on his own. Any suggestions you could give me on how to proceed would be appreciated. Vicki

His last name may have been shortened from a longer name, because I have never found any other VANDLENs in the U.S. According to the family Bible, Daniel was married circa 1847 to Sarah Ann. They had three children: Emma Jane Vandlen FARLEY (1 Jan 1849, NY), Charles Peter VANDLEN (31 Jan 1852, NY - 22 Apr 1931, Kalamazoo, MI), and Ira Lewis VANDLEN (6 Sept. 1854, MI). Daniel appeared in the 1860 census in Blance, Franklin Twp., Fulton Co., OH. He enlisted in the Civil War at Gorham, OH, on 1 Sept. 1861. He was discharged on 18 June 1862, at Columbus, OH. On 16 Sept. 1864, he again enlisted in the Civil War, at Seneca, Lenawee Co., MI, and was discharged 16 May 1865, at Louisville, KY. It is not known where he lived after 1865. Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated.

WARD, BURKECarl Ward Wed Apr 23 1997

Looking for parents, siblings or other realtives of Charles WARD born in Allegany county in 1805. Knowing that there were WARD families in Genessee County at the time, surely some were related to Charles. Charles moved west to Illinois by 1836 where he married Martha BURKE and had 9 children there in Adams County, then later to Knox County Missouri where he died in 1876. A possible relative of Charles was Zebediah, born about 1815 in New York as well. Zebediah moved to Indiana, had 4 children there, then to Illinois near Charles, then to Missouri near Charles again.

WARDGerry Kirk Tue Jun 3 1997
I am a member of the WARD family, through my mother. The story of the WARDs in Ontario County is confused at best. Family memory has the WARDs leaving Cheshire, Connecticut, to settle in Cheshire, New York, in 1796. But there is no record of WARDs taking up land in the area of Canandaigua at that time. There is reason to believe (from a county atlas of 1874) that they actually came from Berkshire County, Mass. The atlas does give the date of settlement as 1796. Why is there no grant of land in the records? What was the name of the first WARD to settle near Canandaigua?

WARREN, HAWKINS, MUNGER, SIMMONS, WITHERELL Unknown submitter Sat Sun Oct 19 1997
I was excited to find the "Town of Bristol" sheet on the Web. My great-great-great grandfather was Abijah WARREN who married Bathsheba (or Bethsheba) SSIMMONS in 1815? in Bristol. I believe her father was Seth SIMMONS. I would be very interested in any books, information, or materials you have for sale that might help me to find out more about my family and the area he lived in. I really know very little about them. Thank you.

Mon Oct 20 1997
I just realized that you have two Abijah WARREN's listed on your town sheet. I checked my genealogy files and realized that Abijah WARREN, who was married to Eunice MUNGER, was the father of Abijah C. WARREN, who married Bathsheba SIMMONS. My scanty records indicate that the older Abijah was Ssupposed to have been a Congregational minister who originally came from Litchfield, Conn., but, after some type of "troubles" while living in Fair Haven, Vermont, switched to Presbyterian and moved to the Bristol area. The following from A History of Fair Haven, Vermont: Page 80 -" Abijah WARREN, to whom allusion has been made above, was from Litchfield, Conn. He was a son-in-law of Dea. (meaning Deacon - jlw) Daniel MUNGER, and was probably here (meaning Fair Haven, Vermont - jlw) as early as this year (meaning 1790 or 1791 - jlw), and may have been here at an earlier period. He appears to have first bought a bulding lot on the road north of Dr. WITHERELL's toward Mr. HAWKINS', in June, 1796, - adding to it, in April, 1797, 30 acres more, all of which he sold to Olney HAWKINS, in July, 1802. He is said to have been a very sanctimonious man, and to have lived in the grist mill house after this time, where he had a large family. "

WELTONThe Reverend Jasper Green Pennington Sun Dec 7 1997
Dear Mr. Burnett, I am researching a paper on Alanson W. WELTON, Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, Clifton Spring, from l814-1821. He was the first Episcopal priest in the Michigan Territory, serving in Detroit for only about a year until his death on September 28, 1822. His wife left a short account of their journey to Detroit from Clifton Springs and it is that which I am editing for publication. Mrs. WELTON (Eleanor) writes that her husband was from Richmond and that she returned there in l822 or l823. I would like further information about the family. Alason was buried in Detroit and a marker at St. Paul's Cathedral notes that he was 34 years old and died on September 29 (rather than the 28th) in November. Any information you might have about the family would be appreciated. WILCOX Diane Dayley  10 May 2010

I'm still looking for Elnathan Wilcox's first wife's name. She is not Hannah Adams as many suppose. His second wife was Hannah Parmelee Isbell whom he married about 1784 in Berkshire Co., Mass. When Deacon John Adams came to Ontario Co., NY in 1789, in company with his son in law, Mr. Wilcox, the son in law was not Elnathan Wilcox. It was Rufus Wilcox, Elnathan's nephew, who married Sarah Adams. Rufus did not stay in Ontario as we find birth records back in Berkshire Co., Mass. of some of his children up to 1799. If anyone has any record of a daughter married to a Wilcox, please let me know. Thanks, Diane Dayley

Would anyone be willing to lookup church membership in Episcopal church Phelps? My goal is for obtaining clues to parentage of Eliphas/Eliphalet WILCOX b. Dec. 1818 Phelps, d. 1 Jany 1904 Phelps, bur. Joslyn Cem. Oaks Corners. (Married Sophia ATWOOD by 1839, she from Penfield NY). His parents are supposed to be Greenborn and Mary WILCOX. Cannot find anyone by that name in census recs. One Freeborn WILCOX had a wf Irene who d. Phelps Jany 1819, age 33 for birth ca 1786. Her death is very close to birth of Eliphas which makes me wonder if she died after childbirth and was actually mother of Eliphas, whose father could well have m. again. This is speculation, but don't want to overlook these names. Freeborn must have had children. Hopefully, Episc. ch. recs. might go back to 1818, or if not, might mention Eliphas WILCOX being confirmed when a child and mentioning his parents. Eliphas prob. m. in Monroe Co., wf's place of residence. Their 1st ch. Cordelia L. was b. Monroe Co. 1839. Harriet, the 2nd d/o Eliphas, was b. 10 Jan 1842 Oaks Corners, and was known to be Episc. Appreciate any lookups if this info is avail. at Phelps, either at the church or in a bk. Looked at Mormon info. your site. Seems church publ. bk is not circulated to LDS local libraries - perhaps because of a copyright. Jackie Humphrey
