LORD CEMETERY
Jones Road at Twitchell Road
intersection of Route 364
Town of Gorham
Rushville, Ontario Co., NY
Read by Lyn Wilson and Larry King Oct 1995; research transcribed Jul 2002.

Introduction

For many years, the Lord Cemetery has been known on the records as the HAWLEY-LORD CEMETERY.   It had always been known by locals as the Lord  Cemetery.    My cousin finally researched deeds and other documents which showed the correct name was Lord Cemetery.  He took his findings to the County, they agreed, and have since corrected the name in their records.

The cemetery has been surveyed several times, each time with differing results.  The first effort to my knowledge was in 1965.  The cemetery was heavily overgrown with brambles at that time and several stones were missed.  The next was by a cousin in the 1970's.  Some effort to clear the area had been made and she and her daughter braved the remaining brambles and recorded much new information.  The cemetery was cleared in the 1980's and another effort was made with less than satisfying results.  We did our survey in 1995 and, unbeknownst to each other, my cousin who had corrected the name of the cemetery also did a survey at about the same time.

The combined results of all of these surveys, plus research into the Census, local histories and other local records, and family research have provided the basis for the following information.  I have a deep interest in this cemetery as I am in some way related to nearly  everyone buried here.  It is a research work still in progress.

As a very sorry commentary on our times, I should note that since our survey in 1995, extensive vandalism has occurred and most of the remaining stones have been damaged or destroyed.
