Photo from Geneva Courier newspaper 5 February 1862; another tool for researchers attempting to place an ancestor in a place and time.  There was no rural delivery service and postmasters were authorized to publish lists of letters that were waiting to be picked up.  In the early days of postal service, postage was often paid by the recipient and notices were posted that mail awaited in the post office to be paid for and picked up.
