This is to certify that I Charles J. Farnum was born April 24th 1845 (town of Johnson, Lamoille Co) VT) was named for my Father, Joseph Farnum. After my Father’s death I went to live with an Uncle William Farnum of Johnson, Vt”who also having a son by the name of Joseph.  I was called Charles Joseph to designate the difference between the two.  I enlisted at Hyde Park, Lamoille Co.Vt” June 1862 with the consent of my Mother if I would consent to enlist under the name that I was christened Joseph Farnum Jr.”  I was discharged June 1865.
