From Geneva Courier 17 April 1861 - Wednesday

The news from the seat of the Southern Rebellion has for the past few days been of the most exciting interest.  The war has been commenced by the Slave propagandists for the purpose of forcing Slavery upon the whole country.  The Laws and the Constitution have been defied and trampled under foot -- the choice has been forced upon us, either to sink down in humble imbecility, or to defend the flag that has so long and gloriously floated over our whole country.  Patriots will not long hesitate which course to take.  When the tocsin sounds "To arms", every lover of his country will rally around her standard and defend it while life remains.

There is no middle ground left.  We are either for our Constitution or against it; we must go over to the camp of its enemies and take the position of the tories of the Revolution, or we must rally around the stars and stripes, and bear them triumphantly aloft.

Party feeling and partisan animosities must be laid aside, and the higher and holier sentiment of patriotism and love for our common country, its Constitution and Laws, and a fixed determination to hand them down to posterity unstained, must band together all patriots in this our common cause.

Whether the present struggle shall be of long or short duration, we trust it will be prosecuted with all the power of the government.  We want to see no more temporizing and no more delicacy, but prompt and vigorous measures that will ensure success.

From Ontario Republican Times 19 April 1861

Mr. Editor: As the Town of Naples claims to be the banner Republican town of Ontario County, perhaps the proceedings of a meeting of the Naples Wide Awakes, held at their club room on the evening after the new of the surrender of Fort Sumpter, may be intersting to some of your readers. It was voted to send it for publicatiion. The meeting was called to order by the President and addressed by several members of the club, after which the following named persons signified their willingness to volunteer to sustain the laws and put down rebellion:

Meigs Brown, Wm. Marks, S. C. Lyon, Seth Miner, S. H. Torry, S. C. Lincoln, R. Murray, Jr., L. Hotchkiss, A. T. Nelson, I. E. Barber, Wray Hinckley, I. P. Whiting, I. W. Price, L. B. Lyon, M. B. Reed, Chauncey Parker, T. Parkinson, Wm. Lavalley, G. B. Fuller.

Also Captain Will W. Clark, of the Naples Light Guard, was present, and tendered the whole Company, with few exceptions and his services to drill them after they were regularly enlisted.

From Geneva Courier 24 April 1861

Our village is fully aroused.  An impromptu meeting was held on Saturday evening at about 8 o'clock at Judge Folger's office on Seneca street.  No notice whatever was given; notwithstanding the offices of Mr. Folger and Schell and Hemiup were crammed full, and the sidewalk and street outside the building for some distance were crowded and lined with our best citizens.  No speeches were made; we are not much given to talking in Geneva, and on this occasion the feeling was too intense for utterance. At the meeting Wm. E. Sill, Esq., was appointed Chairman, Theodore E. Smith, Secretary.  A committee was appointed, consisting of Joseph L. Lewis, Chas. J. Folger, George Barkley, Anson Wheeler, and P. Prouty, Jr.  A subscription was then opened, and in less than an hour $2310 were subscribed to be applied mainly for the support of the families of volunteers.  No subscriptions were asked, but as each man voluntarily came forward and put down his name, an air of silent determination most expressive was observable; and no one doubted the willingness of each subscriber to put down the whole amount of his property, if need be, to sustain the Government, and to back it up with his arm.  The following is the subscriptions up to Wednesday morning:

The Elmira Press says that the soldiers are sucking all the cows in that village, and the owners are grumbling because they cannot get any milk.

From Geneva Courier 19 June 1861

Deros Baley
and Solon Comfort, two very estimable young men of this village, and members of the Geneva Brass Band, have enlisted as musicians in the U. S. Army for five years, at the Rochester Recruiting Station.  They left here last Thursday morning and are now at Fort Columbus, Governor's Island, and report themselves well-cared for and in good spirits.

The Geneva Brass Band is in no wise incapacitated from furnishing music of the most appropriate character in its usual popular style for all occasions, by the loss alluded to above, their places being filled by resident musicians.

From Geneva Courier 31 July 1861

Immediately on the receipt of the news of the recent battle, two young men named Jack Hurd and Almond A. Randall, from South Bristol in this county, started for Washington, with the intention of joining Capt. Faurot's company.  They were furnished with free passes to Washington and Mr. Randall was presented with a handsome revolver by his friends.
