Canadice Hollow Cemetery

Town of Canadice - Ontario County NY

This cemetery is located on the west side of Canadice Hollow Road; north of Coykendall Hill Road.  This is a remote area.  In April 2002, it is in poor condition.  Many stones are toppled -- some stones barely legible, some impossible to read.

There has been an unusual response to this listing of burials.  Our grateful thanks to those who contributed and have added their information to the history of the people who are buried there.

From: Betsy Ransom

Hello, my name is Elizabeth Ransom. I'm a senior Girl Scout whose working towards earning my Gold Award.  I chose to make improvements to a run down cemetery and was given permission by the town board to work on Canadice Hollow Cemetery.  This summer I have been working towards this, part of my improvements have been to clean the gravestones and set some up, either into the ground or back into the bases found nearby.  This has been very successful in my eyes.  While researching for more information on the cemetery I found your listing of people buried there. As I have been working I've been keeping track of people not found on the list or information that doesn't match what was on the head stone. This is what I have found:

We can all be very grateful to Elizabeth for doing a splendid job of helping to preserve the history of this area of the Town of Canadice.  I have added the corrections and additions which Elizabeth has found and they will appear in blue type.

Note 1:  Judith Wiborn's maiden name is ADAMS.  This information kindly donated by Ronda.

Note 2:  David was born Jan.27, 1809 presumably in Sussex County NJ.  He married Hannah Purcell, daughter of Benjamin and Mary {Yawger) born March 16,1813.  David died Dec. 4, 1871 and Hannah died Feb 4, 1887.  Children were Bradford B. born 1836, Speedee born 1841 and Wheeler born 1847.

This information kindly donated by Robert Hoppough.

Note 3 a:  Ronda was correct: Judith Wiborn's maiden name was Adams. Her mother is also buried there in the cemetery: Rachel Adams. Rachel's full name was Lydia Rachel (Colgrove) Adams. She was the daughter of William and Anna Colgrove of Warwick, Rhode Island. She was born in Warwick on April 25 1763. She was the first of Ahijah Adams' four consorts. He, incidentally, was born in Killingly, Connecticut on Nov 21 1758, and died on Feb 3, 1841, in Onondaga County and is buried in East Syracuse (Salt Springs Road Cemetery).

Note 3 b:  I'm sure that Lydia Rachel (Colgrove) Adams is related to Harlow Colgrove, who is also buried in Canadice Hollow, though I don't yet know the nature of that relationship.

Note 3 c:  The Gilbert and Adams families are also related. George Adams, Judith's older brother, married Prudence Gilbert...but that's another story.

Note 3 d:  Eliza A. Wiborn's date of death was Feb 12 1864. She was born - one of (at least) seven children - on January 24 1827 in Livonia, New York.
This information kindly donated by David Baker.

Note 4:
Polly A. Sharpsteen, wife of Harvey; died 22 May 1879; age 60 y 10m 25d; her last child was born 1842 & she is listed on the 1870 census. This information kindly donated by Alice Hill.

Note 5: Vilotta was his second wife, as far as I can tell, My ggggrandmother was his 3rd. Some of her family are listed right below the Rood's (Sharpsteen). This information kindly donated by NEKDOOR.
