Photo from Geneva Courier newspaper 5 February 1862;
another tool for researchers attempting to place an ancestor in a place
and time. There was no rural delivery service and postmasters
were
authorized to publish lists of letters that were waiting to be picked
up.
In the early days of postal service, postage was often paid by the
recipient
and notices were posted that mail awaited in the post office to be paid
for and picked up.
