The Grand Army of the Republic, often referred to as the G.A.R., was founded at Decatur, Illinois, in 1866 by  Dr. Benjamin Franklin Stephenson. To become a member of the Grand Army a man must have served in the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Revenue Cutter Service (today’s United States Coast Guard) between April 9, 1861 and April 12, 1865.  He must have been honorably discharged from the service and have never taken up arms against the United States of America. As the veterans of the Civil War began to pass on the membership of the Grand Army slowly dwindled away. The G.A.R. held its last National Encampment at Indianapolis, Indiana in 1949.  Six surviving Comrades attended that Encampment.  The last member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Albert Wollson, died in 1956.

An organization of the Grand Army of the Republic was instituted at Victor last Monday evening, by Col. J. A. Reynolds, commanding O'Rourke Post Number 1. Col. Emerson, Capt. Warfield and Capt. Smith assisted at the organization. The following officers were duly elected and installed:  Capt. H. G. Dickinson, C.; J. H. Peet, S. V. C.; H. C. Boughton, J. V. C.; H. Simonds, A.; W. Haman, G. M. Clifton Springs, N. Y. - An organization of the soldiers of the rebellion was effected last week, and a new Post of the Grand Army of the Republic mustered in at this place on Monday evening. Col. Prince of Geneva officiated, with the officers of Swift Post of Geneva. Our new post assumes the name of the late Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, who was a native of Phelps. The officers of the new post are:

East Bloomfield, N. Y. - The ladies' auxiliary of Sheridan Crandall Post, G. A. R., organized with 16 members, last Thursday afternoon, at the M. E. church parlors, and the officers elected. Mrs. Ellen G. Farnum acted as instituting and installing officer, aided by the following members of the Canandaigua Auxiliary: Mrs. Raymond, Mrs. Blake, Mrs. Duffy, Mrs. Quick, Mrs. Caton, Mrs. Hutchens, Mrs. McCoy, Mrs. Squires and Mrs. Lines. The following officers were elected and installed:

President - Mrs. L. A. Stevens
1st Vice-Pres. - Mrs. L. T. Partridge
2nd Vice-Pres. - Mrs. S. Mayo
Secretary - Miss A. Kingsbury
Treasurer - Mrs. George Burrill
 Conductor - Miss Nellie Emmons
Asst. Conductor - Miss J. H. Deal
Guard - Mrs. F. Barks
Asst. Guard - Miss Quick
Chaplain - Mrs. George Gaines
